Epic at their most recent User Group Meeting touted more than 100 AI integrations into their platform. Responding to patient messages is, as The NY Times is reporting, one place where AI integration is already happening. Application of these technologies in healthcare has the potential to impact clinical care and without proper guardrails and review could lead to patient harm. At the same time, there’s tremendous potential to improve efficiency in an industry that needs it. There is also evidence to suggest that specifically for responding to patient messages, chatbots may provide higher quality and more empathetic responses. The key for this specific use case is appropriate review by the physician sending the response.
